How does the SCASD School Board election work?

The SCASD Board of School Directors is made up of nine board members. Every two years, about half of the seats are up for election; each elected board member serves a four-year term. This year, there are 11 candidates running for five School Director positions. At the May 16, 2023 primary, all registered Democrats and Republicans will have the chance to vote for up to five candidates for School Director. All candidates are cross-filed, so all 11 candidates will appear on both Democratic and Republican ballots regardless of their party affiliation. The top five candidates in each primary (ranked by total votes received regardless of party affiliation) will advance to the general election on November 7, 2023. The top five candidates in the general election will be elected to the school board.

What is Cross-Filing?

The Election Code allows judges and school board candidates to cross-file for nomination...to seek the nomination of more than one major political party. Cross-filing occurs when a candidate runs in the primary election of not only their own party, but also that of one or more other parties. All 11 candidates will show up on both the Republican and Democrat ballots in May though 6 candidates are registered as Democrats, 3 as Republicans, and 2 as Independents.
